Anticipating a reach

- [Instructor] Anticipation, overshoot, and settle are very important skills to have in the acting or pantomime department. Here's a very simple scene with no anticipation. The character simply picks up the ball. And now the same scene with a simple anticipation. He tilts back a little with his hand moving back even more. Notice also that the fingers splay out and that creates a really nice silhouette. And then reaches for the object. So, this allows the audience a little more time to sense the action. Essentially, we're telegraphing the motion before it happens. This ball morphing into a strong man anticipates the morph by squashing down before the transition. Now without that squash, the morph might have felt like a pop or a mistake. Anticipations are also great for preparing the eye for a really fast action like this off screen zoom.
