- [Voiceover] If you've worked on different animation productions, especially for television or for the web, you've probably seen something like this when it comes to doing dialogue. It's the A, F mouth chart which shows six basic mouth shapes. Now some studios add a few more for custom mouths like F and L where you see the teeth biting into the lip or the tongue hitting the roof of the mouth, but these six shapes are the most common. If you haven't seen this before, please don't be confused by the letters A through F, they do not correspond to the sounds made by the character, they're just labels that describe the different shapes. So the A mouth for example will be used for closed phonemes like B, beh, beh, beh, M, meh, meh, meh, and P. So closed mouth shape here, this would be ooh sounds, does not correspond to the F sound, for example. Pretty straightforward. So here's what the shapes look like when played in sequence.
