How the Lightmass engine works

- [Narrator] Before trying to create a good real time global illumination solution in Unreal, we probably need to understand at least a little bit about what the Lightmass Engine is and how it works, simply because this is Unreal's way of both calculating and storing indirect illumination in a seen-all level. Now, of course, with the release of Unreal 4.22, both ray trace and path trace engines have been added into the rendering makes, and both can, of course, create very nice-looking GI renders for us. For the purpose of this course, though, we will focus solely on use of the Lightmass engine simply because it is still the most integrated and fastest real-time GI solution in Unreal. Whenever we come to the build menu, then, and use any of the lighting options found there, it will by default be the Lightmass renderer or engine that performs the GI calculations that we need, and it will be the Lightmass renderer that then creates light map textures for each and every object in the…
