Positive and negative spaces

- [Instructor] We already discussed the idea of silhouettes in the chapter on strong design, but now we're going to look at the principle as it applies to animation and motion. It's a simple idea. You should be able to read the essentials of a pose from its silhouette alone. And the silhouette of course is just the positive space that's the black area that you see here hammering the nail. The inner details, all the line work, the face, adds to this, but the silhouette or the outline by itself should be enough to convey the emotions and actions of the character. You should also be conscious of the negative space that surrounds the character, like the gaps between arms and the body or between the legs. These negative spaces should also be strong good designs in their own right. This principle extends throughout an entire scene so that each key in a scene should have a strong silhouette, good positive and negative space.…
