Puppets and gestures
- One of the challenges when you animate in a puppet-based program or even in CGI too is making natural-looking poses. So I'm going to show you my method for working in Animate CC from Adobe. If you're working in Toon Boom's Harmony, or Flash, the older version of this program, the principles I'm going to show you, apply. So you can't beat a gesture drawing. And if you try to move a puppet, the problem is you end up with puppety animation. And the ultimate challenge, again, is to work with a puppet that doesn't look like a puppet. So you get the advantages of the puppet but it moves nicely. So how this is done, at least in my case, is I use reference. So if I want to work into a pose that breaks out of the puppet I really have to give myself something to work with. So in this case, I made a reference layer beneath and using some of the drawing tools in here, very crudely sketched a quick thumbnail. Just padlock that.…
