- [Instructor] Let's look at the most common shot types and what they're used for. First, the extreme long shot, in which the characters are tiny relative to the background, sometimes they're little more than dots. This makes an excellent establishing shot because it shows the audience the setting in which the rest of the scene occurs. We can go tighter and we're still a long shot, the figures are still fully in frame, and we can see a lot of the background, so this I still wide enough to be used as an establishing shot. Next is the medium shot. Here we focus on a part of the characters, in this case cropping off their feet. A medium shot leaves enough room for the actors to gesticulate, notice how the middle character can point without his arm going out of frame. If we need an acting scene or to show a strong reaction, a close-up is used. And if we really want to flag the fact that something is amazing is happening,…
