Straights and curves

- This material is also covered in my course, Animation Foundations: Drawing Cartoon Characters, and it is the basic principle of straights against curves. Here you can see the principle in action, the area in red, we have two curves that are curving into one another on the wrist, we have a long thin curve on the index finger and then two sharp or smaller curves counterposed to that. And what this does is eliminates parallel negative shapes. So it's a much more interesting shape design wise than simple parallels. And we can apply this to any part of the body, especially where it applies to areas of bone, as opposed to areas of muscle or fat. So muscle or fat will often be a bit rounder. Whereas bony areas will be straighter. So where you put these straights and curves should not be arbitrary, you should try to think about where they go in correspondence with the anatomy.
