Understanding the basic shader types
- [Instructor] In Maya, we use materials to define the character of the surface. And so a material will define the surface enough so you can kind of tell what it's made out of. So if it was glass or cloth or rusty metal or something like that. So we use materials to create the attributes of that surface. Now, Maya has a number of different types of materials. Some of these are render specific. So for example, some will only work with Arnold but some will work with just about anything. And those are called the Maya basic materials. So let's take a look at those to get started. Now I have some objects here but before we do that let's go ahead and make sure we have our Rendering menu set turned on. And under lighting shading, you'll see we have a Materials tab here. So I'm going to tear this off and you'll see we have three menus here. Assign New Material, if I click that, it brings up a menu that allows me to scroll…
