Using the 3D Paint tool - Maya Tutorial
From the course: Maya: Natural Environments
Using the 3D Paint tool
- [Instructor] In the last movie we saw how to combine a procedural height map texture with a ramp in order to modify the elevation across the surface. For more control, we can use a 3D paint texture that will allow us to paint directly on the object to change the elevation. The 3D paint tool is part of a toolkit called artisan. Artisan was part of a program which was a progenitor or precursor of Maya called Wavefront. And that dated all the way back to the 1980s. The artisan toolkit is kind of antique. And because of that you'll find some limitations. Specifically, you can not use the 3D paint tool on any material shader you want. It's only compatible with certain of the Maya legacy materials, such as Lambert. If we want to paint on a surface we have to use one of those legacy material shaders. I'll select my terrain. Right-click in the View port and choose Assign New Material and click Lambert. And the attribute…
