Work with files and Maya projects

- [Instructor] Maya Project can use a lot of different types of data that come from a lot of different places. It can use geometry data, it can use bitmap images, or textures and all of this needs to be organized so that Maya knows exactly where everything is. So to keep things organized, Autodesk and Maya have created a special directory structure called a Project. Now our exercise files folder is a Project. So I'm going to go ahead and minimize Maya here. And let's just take a look at that. So in this, we actually have a series of named directories and each one of these has specific things to the scene that Maya uses it. So for example, in our scenes folder, we have all of the scenes that we'll be using for our project. We also have things such as source images which would be like the textures and so on. So all of this is organized in a very specific fashion. So if you want to move your Maya project from one place to another, you just move the project folder in this case, Exercise Files. Now, in Maya. So let's go ahead and set our project to be the exercise files folder in our desktop. So we can go into file. And we have two things here for Project. One is called Set Project, and this basically just allows you to set whatever project you want. So I'm going to go to my desktop and I'm going to click on Exercise Files and click Set. And when I do that, if I go to open a scene you'll see that I have my scenes already paths. So it knows where to look for those scenes. Now, if I don't have a project and I want to create one for my own use, I can always go into the project window. So when I open that up it gives me all of the standard directories. And then all I have to do is create a new project, give it a name and a file location. And then if I were to click Accept it will go ahead and create that project and set that as your default. But we're not going to do that. We're actually going to just use the Exercise Files project on your desktops. Go ahead and make sure you have that set as your project, and then we can move on.
