Applying smoothing groups

- [Instructor] Now that we brought our model in, it's time to look at the smoothing groups on different objects, or rather to put some on. My model looks okay, but when I zoom in on some of the elements like the cruciform columns, we can see they need a little work. I have pressed P to go to the perspective view. I'll select the column, and hit Z for zoom extend selected. I'll use Alt and the mouse wheel to orbit around and zoom in down at the base. What we can see here is, well as we modeled it exactly in Revit. There's a faceted column with four fins welded on. This is an editable mesh. What I'm going to do, because this is an instance object, is use an Edit Poly Modifier, and that way I'll get better results on the smoothing. I'll drop down in the modifier list and press E and go to Edit Poly. The Edit Poly then converts this to an editable poly, which in some ways is an easier structure to deal with in the editable mesh.
