Creating a 3D procedural map

- [Instructor] In a 3D program, a map or texture or texture map is some image that's used to vary some material shade or property across a surface. So for example, we could apply an image to the base color. Maps come in two basic varieties, procedural and file maps. A file map is an image stored on disk. A procedural map is some algorithm or procedure that synthetically generates an image. And procedural maps come in 2D and 3D varieties. A 3D procedural map has the additional advantage of not requiring mapping coordinates on objects. So for any 2D map, you need to provide mapping coordinates or UV layout to tell the map how to apply onto a 3D surface. But a 3D map doesn't require mapping coordinates. So you can actually skip the entire UV layout stage, and the 3D map will be applied onto the surface based upon the intersection between the procedural map's pattern in 3D space, and the volume of the object.
