Creating photometric lights
- [Instructor] 3ds Max gives us many powerful options for lighting to produce photorealistic results or stylized results that maybe break the rules of physics. We have different types of lights in Max. If we go to the create panel and then choose lights, we have a pull down list with three different categories. Photometric, standard, and Arnold. Arnold, of course, applies to the Arnold renderer. And the Arnold light has many different modes, but it will only work in the Arnold renderer. standard lights are the legacy lights from 3ds Max 1.0. And standard lights will render just fine in the Scanline Renderer or the Quicksilver Hardware Renderer, but they won't work in Arnold or ART. The photometric lights will work in almost any renderer, and they are like the physical material in that regard. The idea is a physically based lighting solution here which is renderer agnostic.
