High dynamic range imaging

- [Instructor] High dynamic range imaging, or HDRI, is a revolution in the way we store and display images on the computer. It's a way of storing all possible brightness values in the real world. This allows us to do things that we couldn't do before without incurring some costs, such as image artifacts. Now we can change the exposure of a shot or its tonal variation after it's been recorded, after it's been rendered or stored. HDRI then means that we have a lot more freedom in color correcting or grading shots. High dynamic range imaging also enables something called image based lighting in which can illuminate a scene with an image. What is dynamic range anyway? It's the ratio of highest to lowest values in a signal. For an image that means the ratio of it's greatest to lowest value, or brightness. So it's the contrast ratio. Human eyes are sensitive to a very wide range of brightness values. We have a contrast ratio, or dynamic range, of a million to one, but a standard image file…
