- I don't think anyone would argue too much with me when I say that adding materials to CG hair and fur in a way that makes it look both totally believable and yet is still pretty easy for the artist to control is a complex rendering problem to solve. Simply because even a single strand of hair isn't just one solid object, but is actually made up of thousands of translucent and overlapping cylinders, which all adds up to making it a very complex surface that is difficult to replicate in terms of light interaction. To make it even more challenging, an average human head of hair typically contains more than 100,000 hairs, many of which are oftentimes thinner than a single pixel in a render. Enter the V-Ray hair Next material. The natural successor to the still reasonably new V-Ray hair material.
