- Now whilst there are quite a number of project scenarios in which the mapping work we do inside 3DS Max will certainly be complete enough for us to move straight on to applying materials in our scenes, there are other situations, workflows, that may require the addition of hand drawn or painted elements to a texture by means of a skilled texture artist. Now, whilst there are tools avaialable that allow this process to actually take place in 3D space with Max's own view port canvas being one example, artists may still often times prefer or even need to make use of 2D applications such as Photoshop, Painter, and Sketchbook Pro in order to access the vast array of tools and effects that those programs make available. In such instances we will need to render a UV template out of 3DS Max that can then be used as a reference guide by the artist, informing them just where a particular detail will need to be placed in order for it to sit in just the right spot on the 3D geometry.
