Setting shape detail with interpolation
- If you look closely at a curved spline or shape object, you may notice that it's actually not perfectly curved, it's composed out of many straight line segments. And if I select that object and go into the Modify panel and select my vertex sub-object and move that around, we can really see that it's composed out of these straight line segments. And this is kind of of a holdover from the very early days of Max from way back in the '90s, when computers were really slow and we needed to optimize the display of curves. The busiest line is actually a mathematically perfect curve but it's being kind of optimized or decimated in order to preserve performance. And that's fine, except that when you use a spline curve to build an actual 3-dimensional object, the spline quality settings may influence the end result. And so you need to be able to control the decimation or optimization here. And that's accomplished through a rollout…
