Connecting to Android
As noted in the first lesson in this chapter, Android devices have a commanding presence in the market with about an 80% share globally. In just the U.S., that drops to about 50%. But Android still is in the lead currently. Targeting Android APIs is primarily handled through a single universal but flexible SDK. As you can see from the home screen of the Android developer site, currently the latest version is 4.4 KitKat. The Android SDK, available from developer.android.com/sdk, is a bundled system that includes the open source IDE Eclipse, complete with an Android Development Tools plugin, also known as ADT, as well as an SDK Manager. Android has in development a replacement for the ADT powered Eclipse calles Android Studio, which you can get an early access preview of now if you like.
