About this course

- [Instructor] Ableton Live is known to be a very loop-friendly platform. Its session view is specifically designed to work with large sets of looping MIDI and audio clips with lots of sophisticated functions available to manipulate them. Its also proven to be a stable and versatile live performance tool that's able to handle complex tasks in real time and in a musically intuitive way. So when I recently wanted to perform a solo piece using traditional live looping and layering techniques, I naturally thought Ableton Live would be a perfect fit. And, of course, it turned out that it was. But I did encounter a few interesting problems along the way and the solutions weren't always obvious. This course is inspired by my search for those solutions, and seeks to illuminate a number of scenarios that may be useful to a musician performing with real-time loops. We'll start by exploring how much can be done with even just the simplest setup of one looping clip, move on to multiple tracks and scenes, spend some time with the looper device, and finish up with a kind of no-click, multitrack, multi-section performance that was my original goal. You can explore the different approaches and use those ideas that will best suit your live looping needs. In some of the exercise files that are provided with the course, you'll find some controller mappings that I made with my controllers. They most likely will not work with yours and will need to be remapped. If you need a refresher on mapping controls in Live, check out the LinkedIn learning course called Ableton Live Essential Training. And finally, an important aspect of this course is a MIDI remote script called Clyphx Pro. I've come to think of it as a pretty essential tool for the live user who wants to get more out of the program, a sort of magical, next level enhancement. This is not a comprehensive study of Clyphx Pro by any means, but we'll take a look at some situations where the additional control it provides is extremely worthwhile. I found it to be a great advantage, and I think you will, too.
