Choosing sounds for your kick
Typically in electronic dance music, which I'll refer to as EDM from here on out, the kick drum is the basis of your drum track. And so it's important to choose the right sound in context with the particular genre you're creating. For example, the type of kick that would work in trance might be too boomy for use in a dubstep track. The kick you use in a breakbeat track might be too gritty to use in a house tune, and so on and so forth. Define what it is you'd like to create before picking the kick drum and tailor its sound around what you have in your head, or perhaps a track your referencing as an example, so that you get a sense of where it needs to sit sonically. For this example, I've chosen three different sounds that are layered to create one unique kick. Just like you might, I have a huge library of different sounds and samples, and so I usually go through them and audition them one by one until I find something I think might work for my track.
