- While using a MIDI keyboard to record MIDI parts is probably the most musical method, it's not the only way to enter MIDI. Let's take a look at pencil entry and step record, two ways to edit MIDI parts in non-real time. So I've got a default set open and I'm going to add a drum preset by going into the instrument category and into impulse. I'm going to grab this same impulse 606 preset that we've been using and I'm going to drag and drop that on the first MIDI track. In order to click or pencil in notes, I need to have a MIDI clip. I can create one by making a selection on a track and then right-clicking on it and from the contextual menu, choosing insert MIDI clip or using the command: Shift + Command + M. And once I've done that, the clip opens up down here in the MIDI editor and I can click notes in. Now, I should point out that the default length of the MIDI notes is determined by the grid setting.
