Using a drum subgroup

- The drum subgroup is where I want to put all my clops, snares, high-hats, crashes, or toms, or any other such kind of drum hits or drum loops in my project. My general approach to a drum group is I want pretty dynamic, but I want to ensure that I have all my peaks controlled with the limiter to ensure that I don't have any crazy overs or digital peaks that go over zero. You're more likely to encounter this with a drums group because if you're in a chorus section of a song and you have all these drums going on, you have drum loops, you have samples and cymbals and all this crazy stuff, you're likely to have stuff overlap and create giant peaks. My general approach to controlling that is to have some form of limiting but I want to ensure that the limiter is only doing two to three dB, usually, of limiting. I also want to have maybe a little bit of compression, but generally I will listen first and then decide whether I think it needs compression. I will always err on the side of…
