When playback is necessary: Preparing audio stems

In some cases playback really is warranted. There are some sounds that just cannot be reproduced on stage. Perhaps you can't bring that boy's choir on the road with you, or the string quartet is unavailable for that one song in the set. There is unplayable electronic effects. Some things that are made by a machine best left to a machine, that is true. If you do find it necessary to use pre-recorded playback in your show, you'll want to do that by continuing to build the scenes like we have so far, so that all the material for a given song is contained in one row of clips. Whether you're working from your own original session or using audio stems from another source, it's a good idea to lay it out in Ableton's arrangement view in a separate live set. If you're preparing your audio in another program, like Pro Tools or Logic, the process will be very similar. I'll open my original file for one of the songs in this set as an example.
