- [Instructor] What does CAPTCHA mean? CAPTCHA stands for completely automated public turing test to tell computers and humans apart. In other words, CAPTCHA determines whether the user is a real one or a spam robot. CPTCHAs are designed in various ways. Some require you to solve a math problem, although I know plenty of humans they can't solve simple math problems, while others stretch or manipulate letters and numbers and rely on the human ability to determine which symbols they are. And finally others that ask you to type a series of letters and numbers from a given image. According to Google, a CAPTCHA is a program that can generate and grade tests that humans can pass, but current computer programs cannot. For example, humans can repeatedly read distorted text as the one shown here, but current computer programs can't. CAPTCHAs are somewhat effective at reducing web spam.
