How many columns?

- [Narrator] You would be surprised how unorganized input fields can have dire effects on end users. Consequences of using a multicolumn form layout include users skipping fields where they actually have data to input, inputting data into the wrong fields, or simply coming to a halt and puzzling over how to proceed with inputting their data in the first place. And in some cases, users simply give up and abandon the form altogether. One of the problems with arranging form fields into multiple columns is that users will likely interpret the fields inconsistently. If a form has horizontal, adjacent fields, then the user must scan in a Z pattern, slowing the speed of comprehension and muddying the path to completion. Some users may look at a multicolumn form and think they only have to fill out one column. Some may view the columns and think there's a sequence that they must follow, while others assume there's a different…
