Essential 2: An overview of moving selections
- [Instructor] You're looking at a completed visual effects sequence from Beasts of the Southern Wild. This independent film won top honors at Sundance and Cannes and was even nominated for a couple of Oscars. It was my honor, and really fun adventure, to work as onset supervisor on this sequence in which the beasts of the title confront the six year old girl at the center of the story. This is also a perfect example of fundamental questions about compositing that come up when you plan and supervise a visual effects shoot. I had one job here, making sure it was shot in a way that the beasts, also known as aurochs, could be added to the live action shots, including not only motion tracking, but foreground selection. The creatures were not computer generated. The intention was for them to be played by baby pigs in costume that would later be photographed at high speed on a green screen set.
