- [Instructor] One sure sign of a mediocre result with visual effects work can actually be everything looking a little too perfect. Now of course it's understandable to want your work to be as close to perfection as possible, but that may not be what makes it cinematic or interesting. Here's a breakdown of a shot of mine from Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End that started with actors in costume in a pool with a minimal bit of set to which we added foreground and background of a ship, bubbles, god rays, all of which we then obscured by making the shot so dark you can barely make out who's even there. It's almost as if we messed up the shot to make it look better. Here then is a radical concept for you precision and detail-oriented people. It's what the camera takes away from reality rather than what it adds that makes a shot feel cinematic or evocative, or like it belongs in your favorite movie, the one that you make that is.
