Using a track matte
We spent some time creating a custom luma mask, through the luma prep composition. The goal was to isolate the tape marks. This did take some rows scoping work, and I'm going to show you my final result. I select this layer, and expand it, you can see that there are five masks. There's one mask per tape mark. Now see the key frames spread out. Now, because the camera motion is fairly predictable, the key frames occur in a predictable fashion. The exception is where a mask jumps on frame or jumps off. Now in fact, if a tape mark disappears, say behind a wall or off the edge. There's no reason to have that mask stay there inside the frame. So, one trick is to have it pop off. Let me show you, if I just scrub this you'll see that they move and then suddenly they'll jump on or jump off to the edge of frame. If a mask is off the edge of frame, it's not affecting anything.
