What are render passes?

- [Instructor] What are render passes? in visual effects, we'll oftentimes want to combine 3D elements into our shots. Because rendering 3D can be a time-expensive endeavor, a shot is better served. If the look and polish of the 3D elements is decided on in the compositing phase, rather than in one 3D render. To help facilitate this, 3D artists will render what is known as multi-passes or render passes. These render passes separate the components of a 3D element into individual files. These files might include information like the separated shadows, or isolated reflections of objects. The idea is that with all the surface qualities of the 3D element separated, a compositor can then piece them back together with a greater degree of control over art direction than in 3D. In the following movies, we'll see how we can combine live action footage with multi-pass 3D elements.
