A short history of green screen

- The use of green screen and blue screen has been around for a long time. In fact, almost 100 years. Back in the 1930s, RKO Studios was first to invent green screen technology. It was used on a lot of films such as The Thief of Bagdad and others and it was a really cool technology that allowed for primitive but very useful visual effects that extended the narrative possibilities of Hollywood films. This in fact led to the Best Special Effects Academy Award that year. Believe it or not, we've had special effects in movies for going on 100 years. The technology was around for a long time but continued to improve. In the 1950s, the Warner Bros. Studio started working to improve the process allowing for traveling mattes and new enhancements to blue screen technology. It was actually then used on a very important film, The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway and the story was adapted with great results.
