Understanding your deliverables

- Before we start to surface, it's always a good idea to establish clear deliverables concerning surfacing standards. This means referring to an internal surfacing standards document, which would outline what is required for tangency, curvature, and other incidentals, like the acceptance of periodic entities, rational, and non-rational geometry. The reason for this is that you don't need to create higher quality surfaces than are needed for your deliverables, especially if that involves more time, money, and resources. And you certainly do not want to create surfaces of a lesser quality than is accepted by your internal checking group, or the customer. Typically your customer will have a set of surfacing standards that you can refer to. And if they don't, then you have to either propose acceptable standards, or both parties have to negotiate these standards. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to have this agreed before surfacing starts, as any re-working of surfaces downstream can become extremely expensive. Ultimately the finished part will have to go through a checking procedure, to verify it's correct to pass to engineering. This is where a surfacing standards document and sign off procedure would be used.
