- [Instructor] When moving services to the cloud, organizations primarily have two options for choosing a database service: a self-managed database or a fully managed database. Organizations commonly follow the lift and shift strategy, meaning they try to move their services as is from an on-premises environment to a cloud environment, such as AWS. This strategy is understandable because it feels like the easiest thing to do. So a database that was running on premises is commonly moved to the cloud as a self-managed instance. Managing a database is a sensitive and technical endeavor and requires careful planning and execution to avoid catastrophic downsides, such as database downtime and even data loss.
