Direction of action

- When you stage your scenes, it's important to have a consistent approach to the direction of motion. Where are the characters going from, where are they going to and where are they in relation to each other? Now, in this shot, our hero, Bumstead, is fleeing from the evil Martian robot, which is an extremely good idea. The next shot, he's being chased this direction and now, in this direction. And, let's look at those again. So, in this scene, he is going from left to right and, in this scene, the chase is from right to left and, in this scene, we've gone from left to right again. So, basically what they're doing is reversing their direction. Now, unless you specifically want to suggest a zig zag action, this sort of reversal will only confuse the audience and disorient them. For 99% of the time, it's a much better idea to keep a consistent pattern of action. In other words, once the chase begins, we should have it going from left to right, left to right, left to right and not change…
