Straight vs. curves and parallels
- One of the principles we take for granted today in animation design and cartoon design is the principle of straights against curves, and when they began to animate in the 20s, because their skills were so weak, there was a tendency to avoid pointy edges, so they made everything rubber hose, everything was round. And this is a very cute and endearing style but it can be very difficult to get nice designs out of it, so animators, as their skills grew, they became more bolder by adding straight lines, and their designs became stronger so let's take a look at some of these. Here's a slightly more modern style and as you can see, we have a very different way now of drawing something like an arm, and the principal change is the application of straights against curves, and here we see curved lines at the upper side of the arm and much more straight lines, and when I say straight, I don't mean ruler straight, I mean much more relatively straight lines than what you see on top, and these…
