Timing and frame rates

- Before going any further, it's important to talk about frame rates. In this slide, you can see a 24 frame per second line, and a 30 frame per second line, each of these frame rates will play smoothly to the eye, but as you can see, each frame has a slightly different weight. A four-frame hold in 24 frames per second is the same as a five-frame hold in 30, for example, and you can see the dividing line here where they both happen to line up, four to five. Remember that most of the best animation textbooks are written by traditional veterans who use the word 'frame' to mean 1/24th of a second. For example, the Eric Goldberg book, Character Animation Crash Course, and the RIchard Williams book, The Animator's Survival Kit, all use the word 'frame' to mean 1/24th of a second, not 1/30th.
