Types of shots and camera moves

- [Voiceover] Before you can begin to storyboard, you really need to know the basic film grammar, the types of camera shots, and camera moves. So let's look at some of the basic ways of setting up a scene. It's common to start out a new sequence or an act with an establish shot like we see here. Very quickly sketched in, takes in the entire scene. We see the city, the characters, where the characters are in relation to the scene. And this can be an internal shot. You could show them inside a huge art gallery. Or it could be, as we have here, an external shot in a city park. Common then to step into a long shot. And this takes in the entire group of characters now up close. You can see details on them and again where they are in relation to one another and the environment. Medium shots, also another step in, show the characters from the waist up. You leave enough space for the character to move around, enough room for their arms to gesture without them flying off the screen. And if…
