One of the best examples of a GIS data portal is the National Map Viewer by the USGS. Notice here on the left we have our table of contents. These are the layers that we can turn on or off to visualize. For example, if we're interested in the transportation network, the roads throughout the country. If I click on this, then it's going to show me, at this scale, all of the major roads. If we zoom in to an area, here I'll click on the Zoom In box and I'll draw a box around Denver. Then notice the lines change based on the scale. We can turn on as many different layers that we would like to to visualize. Let's say we're interested in something like land use or land cover. Here I'll open the dialog box on Land Cover, and notice we have three options. We have NLCD 2006, 2001 and 1992. This is the National Land Cover data set from each of these years. Which, across the United States, highlights different components of the land uses. Such as urban land use or commercial districts. Or…
