Sharing GIS data

If you have GIS Data or are planning on creating GIS Data, one of the key aspects to consider is the sharing of that data. So, let's briefly talk about that. How portable will your data be? Are you planning to allow downloads of data? And what limitations exist in access to your web server? Other aspects of portability require you to consider whether you will offer different formats for the data, such as the Census Bureau offers Shape files and geodata base options, from more recent census data. If you are building an application, and are allowing users to extract data from a map interface. Does your web server set up allow fast downloads? Another aspect to consider is size. GIS Data can become excessively large and it might not be possible to share your data based on this limitation. If you are renting hard drive space on a server in the Cloud, if you plan to share that data you might have to consider how much space you have available to you and what the costs are to scale up.
