Esri is online mapping is powerful. And much of that power is based on the ArcGIS server. The server is a sophisticated combination of technologies, that allow the developer a unique geospatial application development environment. It also allows you to serve geospatial data, vector and raster. And allows you or your users to geo-process giving you the full leverage of power available from ArcGIS. Although very expensive, the power of the ArcGIS server is simply unmatched for what we can do with it for geospacial service. I'll click over here on system requirements. Esri provides two basic approaches to the server concept. The standard hardware software environment on a sever machine you control, and also in the cloud, a cloud-based environment where you control the server, or you allow Esri to manage the server.
