Understanding the type of data you have

GIS data represents reality. The re-presentation or representation of places as points or polygons or images, acts as a metaphor for reality. As the map-maker or cartographer, you have a variety of symbologies available to you in Arcmap to visualize and enable design options for your data. There are two main GIS data types. Vector data, refers mostly to data represented as points, lines and polygons. While raster data, is made up of rows and columns, or a grid of pixels, most commonly thought of as imagery or elevation data. I'll discuss both later in this course. The data types have developed since the advent of the 1960s emergence of GIS in Canada, England, and the United States. Through the work of several in analytical cartography, vector data and raster data types became the dominant vocabulary. With the advent of the personal computer in the 1980s.
