Rendering block with cast shadow

- [Instructor] A classic shape to practice with is a 3D block. Turning a block in space and varying the lighting emphasizes the three-dimensionality of the shape. You can apply this directly to drawing the figure and ultimately blocking in light and shadow. Look at how this block-like shape can be applied in figure drawing. On the left here, I've drawn a figure purely out of straight lines, and I've made all the forms into blocks. Look at how the facets are really clear and the ones that face the light that I'm highlighting in blue really receive the light in a very distinct way. On the right here in this Luca Cambiaso drawing, he was known for his faceted versions of the figure. They're very sculptural and very simplified. You can practice this with everyday objects around the house. Here's a setup I use for my students to practice drawing takeout boxes in various positions.
