- Hi, I'm Will Kemp and I'd like to introduce you to the foundations of acrylic painting, Light and the Landscape. One of the most exciting things for me as a painter is when I get to experience fabulous light conditions along with amazing architecture. And you don't get much more inspirational places than the skylines of Venice in Italy. For centuries, Venice has been a destination for artists because of the warm pastel shades of the Venetian sky framed by striking buildings reflected in the surrounding water. On this course, I'm going to show you how to capture the warm skies as a sun sets behind the Venetian skyline. When you're first starting to work with acrylics, it's very easy to get tempted to work with the very small brushes and paint really sharp lines and your painting can very easily lose that sense of atmosphere. I'm going to demonstrate techniques that add texture to the surface of our canvas allowing for looser brush handling and broken edges. We use large brushes and palette knives to add thicker in pastel passages. Clean harmonious color with a simple soft pastel palette that unifies the mood between the sky and the sea. We'll cover the importance of accurate drawing when handling architecture even when painting in an impressionistic style. Simple color studies and small tonal poster studies before we move on to the more developed stages of our larger scale finished painting.
