Microphone selection
- Once we've done everything possible with our studio pre-production to optimize our vocal session, it's time to start thinking about gear. Since the microphone is the first piece of equipment in the recording chain that the voice hits, choosing which mic to use is crucial to getting a great vocal recording. For each singer and song, there's arguably one type of mic that best supports the music and the vibe of the production. And believe it or not, that mic isn't always the most expensive mic. The one you would have thought would work, or the one the audio gear salesman told you is made for vocals. I want to spell out three important tips to selecting the right mic for a song. Number one, know what it is you're looking for. In other words, what is the sound in your head you're trying to capture as a producer or engineer? Is it expensive, slick, and hyped?
