Talkback microphone demeanor

- When you work as a produce or engineer in the studio, you're entrusted with a very powerful tool, the talk-back mic. Being a singer on headphones in a closed-off space can be a very isolating experience, and often the only guiding light is the voice in their headphones. So I want to discuss a few ideas about talkback mic demeanor and share some dos and don'ts since it can really affect the vocalist's well-being, and therefore their performance. First, some technical details. A talkback mic is a dedicated mic that allows one-way communication from the control room to the talent when they're in an enclosed space. You can set it up via hardware as I have here in my studio. I have a microphone patched to my headphone system, and I can control the mic on or off with a foot switch. I like the foot switch 'cause I can operate it hands free. Or you can set up a talkback mic using software, by dedicating a channel of your DAW, which you can manage turning on and off either via a software…
