Using Auto-Tune during the recording phase

- In the Vocal Production Techniques: Editing and Mixing companion courses, I'll be discussing some technical points of using Auto-Tune processing. But here, for the recording side of things, I want to share one helpful technique I've come across that uses Auto-Tune software, not as a way to fix after the fact, but as a tool to help to get a better take, in terms of pitch delivery as it's being recorded. Now personally, I don't use any Auto-Tune software unless I absolutely have to. So here's a way of using it so you don't have to use it. Confused? Let me explain. One helpful way to navigate an inspired singer with some pitch issues, is to record a take, then process fairly heavily with Auto-Tune on that take. And then you play the tuned take back in the singer's headphones quietly or as loud as needed as they record another take against it. I call it the karaoke approach.
