- Well, so far we've talked about the typical mics that everyone likes to use on drums: your bass drum, your snare drum, your tom, cymbals, ride, hat. The next fun thing is to use something different and unique to your sound in your studio on your drum kit on that particular record. So, I like to use what I call the stunt mic. And that is any kind of mic you find that's broken or junky-sounding, trashy, just something that's unique, mid-rangy, aggressive, that you normally wouldn't use on a high-fidelity recording. So, I have this mic, the brand isn't important. You can get 'em on eBay, I find 'em in flea markets, in thrift stores, wherever. Something that looks funny is gonna get a kick from the drummer, he's gonna like that. And the client will always wonder what you're doing down there. So, it'll be interesting.
