Distorting the trash mic
- Another way to get really aggressive drum sounds is to add saturation or distortion to individual tracks or mixes of different tracks. When I cut this song, I made a trash track, what I call a trash mic, and in this case, it was a little omnidirectional, trashy-sounding mic near the drummer's knee, so, have a listen to what we've got. (muffled drum and cymbal beats) A mid-rangy, rubbish-sounding kind of thing, so, we can make that even more aggressive and push the envelope of distortion with this microphone and just see where that brings us, so for that, I'm gonna go in the box. (drum and cymbal beats) All right. This is one of my favorite distortion toys for drums. It's called the Decapitator and it's made by Soundtoys. So we can get all sorts of sounds out of this thing. We're gonna take a sound that's already trashed and we're gonna smash it up even more, so check it out.
