Getting a great kick drum sound
(drum beats) - [Voiceover] So we've gone through miking the drum kit. I've got my mikes in the basic positions that I like to start from and when I sit down at the desk, the first thing I do is have a listen to all those mikes in those default positions. I can go through them one by one. I can listen to them against each other and sort of decide where I need to go from basic starting points. What I'm listening for is what I can do better. And I need to decide from those basic sounds where we need to go, what needs to move, what mikes need to change, the angle of attack that might need to change. Is the mike getting to the pre amp without any distortion issues? Without any phase issues? Without any single ended microphone cable issues? All these other things, just making sure that all my microphones sound somewhat like I expect them to sound. If they don't, we have to figure out that problem and move on.
