Getting larger-than-life sounds from the rack tom and floor tom mics
- To round out the close mics, I'm gonna go and deal with the toms now. Josh only hit the toms a few times throughout this song, but they're important, they gotta be loud, punchy, big and round, and thunderous. Now when we recorded them, they sound good, but I like to come back in the mix and process them and really make them sound a little surreal, a little bigger than they were when they were recorded. So, it was a 12-inch tom and a 16-inch tom, I wanna make it sound like a 14 and an 18. Recording that size drum is difficult, recording a 14-inch rack tom and an 18-inch floor tom is tough, but the spirit of what I want out of them is just bigger, and more, right? That's what we're looking for in rock, everything needs to be larger than life. So, we're gonna work on these toms a little bit, I'm gonna find a few fills, and we'll put them in isolation, and make sure the close mics sound thunderous and rad.
