Listening to the faders-up track

- The first thing I do when I'm handed a song to mix, is I'll listen to all the tracks, just push 'em all up, get a general balance and a feel for what's going on, especially if I've never heard the song before. It's important to figure out where you're gonna go. Once you put up all those faders, you're gonna know, as a mixer, somewhat instinctively, what you're gonna need to do to the drums. And generally the stuff I work on, the drums provide a foundation for what's going on, so, oftentimes, I start with the drums, and then add other instruments. It's important not to work in isolation too long, because you can get the greatest drum sound in the world over here, and then you add in the guitars and bass and vocals and all the other things, and it doesn't work, and that's a total drag, so, it's important to bounce back and forth between drums and the rest of the mix.
